When in January 1938 Dalí's Rainy Taxi greets the first visitors to the first international Surrealist Exhibition in Paris, the press is divided between sarcasm and outrage. What make up this world of threats and ambush? Andre Bretón was to write 'it has since revealed itself to be only too pathetic too justified in terms of darkness weirdness sofocation, to those who then acused us of releshing that atmosphere, it would be too easy to reply that in fact we where a long way from the blackness and the cruelty of the days to come.'
